The name is made up of twist- derived from the twisting mechanism and the term stylus, based on the oldest writing implement in the world (from the Greek grapheĩon = writing implement).
The creation of a new writing instrument fascinated those at LEUCHTTURM1917. They found inspiration in the era in which the company was founded. The 1920s produced ideas in art, architecture and literature that are still style-defining today.
The design of the lettering is derived from the Sütterlin. A starting point for learning cursive handwriting developed by the Berlin graphic artist and pedagogue Ludwig Sütterlin, which spread throughout Germany in the course of the 1920s and replaced the previous Kurrent typeface. In 1941 the Sütterlin script was banned. Today only a few people master this special handwriting.
